What is a Riad?

The Arabic word ‘Riad’ literally translates to ‘garden’. Riads are therefore the traditional Moroccan house which has a garden in the centre. The say that an English man’s house is his Castle, well we can say that a Moroccan Man’s house is his Garden! The concept of a Riad is that of a family house which is completely closed to the outside world complete with it’s internal garden, a water fountain and individual bedrooms with common living rooms shared by the inhabitants of the Riad. Traditional all the families of the major cities of Morocco lived in a Riad. Riads were the official residency of the whole extended family. Riads range in their architectural styles and grandeour. Just like Victorian or Georgian houses varied depending on the families that built them and on which part of a City they were in. Som Riads are more like Palaces, with extremly large court-yards and intricate tiles and wooden beams.
